Animal Community and Communication

by: Jacky Hui

Most individuals may believe that animals lack intelligence, making them inferior, when it comes to humans. However, you might not be aware of how much non-human animals resemble people. People frequently believe that animals cannot establish communities, and are unable to communicate with one another. This, however, is not the case.

Animals have a variety of methods of communicating with each other. Some animals, like bees, use chemical signals to alert the hive when there is a change in the environment, such as an intruder. Other animals, like dolphins, use sounds to communicate with each other. Animal communities are formed because some animals need others for survival. For example, if a lone lion were to wander into the jungle looking for food he would be less successful than if he found a pack of lions who could work together to capture prey.

Communication is an essential part of forming communities. It enables animals to establish a hierarchy, share important information, warn one another of danger, or provide comfort in times of stress. Communication can come in many forms such as calls, body language, gestures, vocalizations and scents.

Vocalizations are among some of the most common ways animals communicate. Vocal communication is used by many species including birds, whales, insects, primates and frogs. Each species has a distinct call it uses to communicate with one another. Some vocalizations include: crickets’ chirping, dogs barking, frogs croaking, lions roaring or geese honking.

Animals Learning Language

When it comes to animals and their ability to learn language most people think that they are incapable of such an ability.  Did you know about Bunny the talking dog ?

Bunny is a female sheep-a-doodle owned by Alexis Devine. Devine has been and still is teaching her dog, Bunny the English language. Devine has made this possible by teaching her dog using a method called AAC ( Augmentative and alternative communication).  Devine is able to teach her dog Bunny how to communicate with her  by using buttons that play a certain word when pressed. So for instance, if Bunny pressed outside, that means she wants to go outside. After watching many of Devine’s instagram clips, you start to realize that Bunny actually understands what Devine is telling him. For instance, In one video Bunny pressed the buttons  “Dad” and “ where” to ask where his father(owner) was. When Devine replies “ he’s at work he’ll be home later” Bunny understands and usually stops pressing the buttons after she is answered.  This example of Bunny’s communication skills tells us that animals are capable of learning language.
